Elena Estes, an ex-undercover cop who has rejected her privileged but
loveless upbringing and is working in an upmarket stables, finds herself
thrust back into being a detective again when a friend she knows is
murdered and dumped in a canal. Her quest for the truth leads into the
glittering world of wealthy Palm Beach socialites, and to the group of
powerful men who are practised in supplying alibis for each other.
Among them is Elena's hated ex-husband Bennett Walker. But the dead
woman also had links to the Russian mafia and to a very dangerous career
criminal. Elena's former lover is the cop leading the investigation which
helps to complicate affairs. Hoag's thriller keeps up a good pace and she
has great fun painting savage portraits of the arrogant and rich men that
tough girl Elena despises. The squeamish should note that there's a very
graphic, stomach-churning scene of torture towards the end of the book.
And you don't have to be a horse lover to enjoy the equine setting.
