Work as a cop in the missing persons department of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis
and St Paul's, is overshadowed for Sarah Compton by the recent past. Husband
Shiloh is serving time in prison and Sarah is suspected of involvement in the killing of
a murderer and rapist. Sarah is approached by a young woman who wants her to take
on a search for her twin brother, missing after living away from the Hennessey family
for many years. The more she learns about the family, the more she admires the
children's stoicism and the more she craves the truth that led one child to be treated as
a scapegoat by their famous author father. But Sarah is a flawed and human character
who makes up her own mind about situations rather than simply following procedure.
Sarah's choices bring her into jeopardy as well as threatening those around her and
the mistakes she makes have tragic consequences. No happy endings here. Life is
complicated, confusing and difficult. But, as the title implies, there is hope in the
sympathy we have for each other. Gripping reading with an assured style. A
welcome new writer - this is Compton's second novel - who will surely go far.
