A stunning picture of war-torn London, rich in precise period detail and peopled with vivid and fully realised characters. Silent screen star Mabel Morgan is found impaled on railings in Fitzrovia. Initially labelled suicide, the death disturbs DI Ted Stratton who begins to investigate. The trail leads to some of the city’s most notorious gangsters. Meanwhile MI5 agent Diana Calthrop is working undercover, delighted to be away from the stifling confines of her mother-in-law’s house and eager to play her part for victory. But things turn increasingly dangerous when Diana unearths evidence that her own boss is spying. As the two narratives converge, connections are made between the manoeuvrings of the security services and the dirty dealings of the crime lords. Fresh and unpredictable, this is an immensely pleasurable read. Wilson has written several stand alone titles, Stratton’s War is billed as the start of a series, let’s hope she’s hard at work on the next instalment.
