Carla Banks is the pen name of Danutah Reah, one she adopted when launching her
last title, the psychological thriller Forest of Souls. While that novel had links to
Eastern Europe, in this one Banks sets her stall in Saudi Arabia, giving us a
considered and assured insight into life for Westerners in the Desert Kingdom. When
Roisin meets Joe Massey a whirlwind romance and marriage ensue and she follows
him to Saudi Arabia where he has work. Roisin takes up a position teaching English
to young Saudi women at the university. Her work there is restricted by the customs
and codes of the society; she is stuck between the hidebound encounters with her
students and fellow staff and the stultifying life of the ex-pats in their enclave. It is
with relief that she learns Joe will soon be able to leave and they will start a new life
in Australia. However Joe has a secret, a history in the Kingdom where one of his
friends was publicly beheaded, and events explode with brutal consequences.
Meticulously researched and fluently written this is a page turner, a convincing story
with satisfying and unexpected twists and an appealing central character.
