A refreshing twist on the customary child-abduction thriller when mother of three Claire begs the kidnapper who has broken into her house to take her in place of her young daughter. Claire is held hostage in a shabby motel. Bit by bit she gets to know her captor, Jose, a quiet Mexican, and pieces together the reasons behind the abduction. At the same time an emerging back-story gives good reason for Claire’s existing paranoia and neuroses. What she divines concerning Jose’s mission reveals unpalatable facts about the comfortable married life she has been living, and the man she married. Claire’s narrative is tense with apprehension but also rich in self-deprecating humour. A riveting story written with a good ear for language and some poignant imagery from debut novelist Simmons, who has previous experience in journalism and advertising.
