Chris Simms is carving out a niche for himself (and work for his conscientious
and decent DI Jon Spicer) as a chronicler of serial killer chillers set in
Manchester. In Savage Moon, Spicer, a new father, is working on an
unsettling case. A woman is found with her throat ripped out on Saddleworth
Moor and hairs under her nails are identified as coming from a Panther. A
second body, killed in the same way, is found in a car park known to be a gay
rendezvous. With rumours of a black cat stalking the moors on the edge of
the city, igniting an instinctive terror in the local population, Spicer has to
struggle with awkward colleagues at work and a needy and unhappy wife at
home while trying to make headway. Savage Morning is satisfying and
wonderfully atmospheric with some beautifully nuanced observations on the
demands of being a first-time parent as well as some unforeseen and exotic
revelations about the background to the killings. Simms was recently
nominated as one of Waterstone's '25 Writers of the Future' and he should be
onto a winner with this book.
