New father, Charlie Watson gets unwittingly dragged into a mystery in the wake of his dissolute brother Leo’s death. While Charlie makes a living as a wedding DJ and eBay trader, Leo had been a Tom Waits impersonator. But Leo had secretly set up as a private eye, investigating the disappearance of a rich woman’s dog, and not long after had dumped his stunning girlfriend. Fuelled by curiosity, and the joys of escaping from nappies and possets for a bit, Charlie re-traces Leo’s steps. Landing himself in a whole heap of trouble. Holmes is an engaging writer: affectionate about music and the dire straits negotiated by the wedding DJ, convincing on the topic of lost youth and spot-on when he writes about the terrors, trials and joys of living with a wakeful baby. There are lashings of sharp humour and also some disturbing jolts in the book as Charlie traces current events back to childhood days and a tragedy that involved his own family.
