Two weeks after giving birth to her daughter, Florence, Alice Fancourt goes
out without her baby for the first time. When she returns to the house she
shares with her husband David, his mother Vivienne and his son Felix, she
finds Florence gone and a strange baby in her place. It's a nightmare made
worse by the fact that no-one believes her. David insists the baby is theirs
and the police believe Alice is mentally disturbed. One policeman, DC Simon
Waterhouse does have some doubts: David's first wife was murdered and her
killer convicted but was it a safe conviction? While he looks again at that
case, Alice must work alone and in secret to try and escape the trap she is in
and save her daughter. Excellent psychological thriller from Hannah, who is
best known as a poet. The excruciating situation of being alone against the
world is well-realised and although at times Alice's naivety can be a little
irksome we are still rooting for her – and trying to work out the truth. Highly
engaging.
