There’s quite a bizarre tone to Light Reading: a blend of comedy and dark nightmare as two bored RAF wives embark on solving a mystery in the wake of their friends' suicide. Anorexic, chain smoking Lena and inveterate pessimist, overweight Pru find their quest leads to the rundown seaside town of Allcombe, where TV celebrity Crystal Tynee ended her own life. Drawing on elements of the odd couple and road trip genres, Whiteley has great fun putting her characters through the mill though there is a sad and shocking secret history underpinning the story. Witty, surreal and sometimes disturbing, this is the first of a series featuring the unlikely sleuths.
