Kittyhawk Down: The Second Challis and Destry Mystery by Garry Disher
pbk out June 08 (Bitter Lemon Press) at £8.99

This is the second in Disher’s Australian police-procedurals featuring Inspector Hal Challis, Sergeant Ellen Destry and their team. There’s a melancholy, disillusioned tone to the novels, the characters have complicated lives and are haunted by broken dreams and the dark reality of the crimes they encounter. Challis is investigating the case of a missing toddler as well as that of an unidentified ‘floater’ who has been fished from the sea. His relationship with journalist Tessa Kane is fragile. His mentally-ill wife is incarcerated (after trying to kill him) and plagues him with phone calls. Meanwhile Ellen Destry has worries about the tensions in her marriage and her teenage daughter and Pam Murphy is treating herself to a new car. A gratifying feature of the series is the way Disher delves into the web of relationships between the distinctly drawn police officers, the bickering and fussing between them allows both humour and poignancy.
