When a young black man, Darren McGee, is found floating in the River Crow, the
coroner returns a verdict of suicide. Darren was mentally ill and had attempted to kill
himself before. However, his cousin, Paul Shaw, a respected investigative journalist,
believes that Darren was murdered and his death racially motivated. Detective Chief
Inspector Jacobson and DS Kerr are not convinced by the man's claims but when
Shaw himself is murdered, they have no choice but to launch a double murder enquiry.
An intelligent and solid police thriller from McDowall, deftly and satisfyingly plotted.
Jacobson and Kerr are well-rounded characters with plenty of flaws. Their own
domestic intrigues add an extra entertaining and sometimes humorous dimension to
the story.
