Struggling actor Guy Fletcher finds himself out of work (again) when he gets beaten
up after objecting to a joke he overhears in a dingy pub. The subject of the joke was
Guy's long lost, famous actress mother who has just died in a plane crash in France.
With nothing better to do, Guy sets off on a quest to find out who made up the joke.
His mission takes him the length and breadth of the country but before long he
realises he is being shadowed by three blokes: an Englishman, an Irishman and a
Scotsman.
Horowitz is a prolific children's author as well as the screenwriter of Foyle's War.
The Killing Joke is stuffed with old jokes, clichés, punch lines and a menacing band
of stereotypes. Horowitz has crafted an excellent comic thriller which is a real delight
to read. And it'll make you chuckle.
