In A True Light by
John Harvey
Sloane, a successful forger, is released from prison after doing time for
his part in a high profile art scam. Returning home he finds a letter from
Jane Graham, a woman with whom he had a passionate affair in his youth.
Jane is dying and wants to talk to him face to face. She tells Sloane that
he is the father of her estranged daughter, Connie, and implores him to find
Connie and act as a peacemaker. Connie is trapped in an intense and violent
relationship with Vincent Delaney, a man the police believe has killed and
will not hesitate to kill again. Sloane has to decide whether to walk away
or stay and fight for Connie. Meanwhile Delaney is feeling cornered and
becoming more unpredictable and dangerous.
Jazz, art, poetry and the New York scene of the nineteen fifties and sixties
form the rich background of Sloane's past. The narrative also takes us to
contemporary London, Italy and the USA but the most significant journey of
course is Sloane's, as he is cast suddenly into the unfamiliar and
challenging role of father and saviour. A departure from Harvey's acclaimed
Resnick series, In A True Light is an impressive, evocative and affective
story. Harvey writes succinctly with a fine sense rhythm. One for fans and
new readers alike.
