First book from the creator of the hit TV show Spooks. Espionage again but much more than that in a story of two friends on the run and trying to make sense of an unexpected vendetta. Charlie and George work dead end jobs in a photo kiosk situated in the London Underground. Charlie, in his late twenties, lives in a grotty bed-sit and his life (as well as his work) seems to be going down the tube. George, a fanatic of locked room mysteries, is a "baked potato of a man with flint eyes" and no dress sense. These unlikely heroes are soon forced to quit London to stay alive. Their travels contain plenty of surprises and sudden twists and a friendship blossoms between them. The murky world of the intelligence services is portrayed as deadly, farcical, mundane and terrifying – and quintessentially British. An assured debut. At times touching, frequently funny, and very, very readable.
