A serial killer is targeting the prostitutes who work in Manchester’s West Lane. The murderer leaves a memento in the entrails of each corpse– a tiny forget-me-not flower. Young Lisa Noone lives with her mother Pat, a ‘working girl’. Their life is muddled, sometimes squalid but not lacking in love. Lisa is desperate for her mother to give up streetwalking and Pat keeps promising she will, especially as another appearance in court could see her imprisoned and Lisa taken into care. One night after a youth club disco Lisa is attacked by two so-called school friends but saved by gorgeous stranger Benny. Lisa is smitten and flattered by Benny’s interest in her. She has no inkling of the deadly intent that lurks beneath his charming exterior.
Cracking page-turner from Manchester based Heller who puts a new spin on the serial killer story by remaining most interested in the (potential) victims. Moss Side, Hulme and Alexandra Park form the backdrop to this honest, gritty, compassionate account of life on the margins. If swearing bothers you – steer clear – it comes with the territory here. Great stuff.
