DC Karen Sharpe is still an emotional wreck, damaged by the violent situations of the recent as well as the not-so-recent past. Her situation is acknowledged at work where she’s been allocated to safer ground, investigating fraud cases. But when a pregnant woman is murdered, Karen is dragged in to talk to the six-year-old daughter. It’s a task that she finds unbearable and prompts nightmares from the past. Buckling under the strain of her current relationship with fellow officer Pete Bains, and concerned for the safety of her own daughter Mairead, Karen discovers comfort and hope from an unexpected quarter. As the city of Bradford erupts in race riots, Karen finds herself fighting demons from within and danger from without. Connor sustains tension well in a novel that clocks in at over 400 pages. Those who enjoy police procedure will have plenty of authentic detail to savour (Connor was involved in over thirty homicide prosecutions and worked closely with the police as a barrister for the Crown Prosecution Service). A gritty, noirish series with a fantastic protagonist.
