Driver is a stunt driver by day, working for the movies in L.A. and a getaway
driver for criminals by night. He's one of the best, at both jobs, until he's
double-crossed and it all starts to unravel. Sallis is one of the great noir
voices in crime fiction, his writing is spare and precise and perfectly tuned. His
dialogue sings. The violence is bloody and painful. The narrative switches
about in time and this isn't the sort of book you can skim read - you need to
savour the prose. Drive paints an unforgettable picture of L.A., the dive bars,
seedy motels and movie lots. Sallis describes ordinary and extraordinary
lives, looks at the chance encounters and particular circumstances that give
rise to crime and violence. Most particularly this book captures the tragedy of
Driver's life and tells his story with humanity. Stunning.
