Myron Bolitar is an ex-baseball player turned sports-agent who is unhappy to find his parents putting the family home up for sale and then very worried when he learns his father is ill. Out of the blue an ex-girlfriend, the first to break Myron’s heart, turns up with a dramatic request. Her son Jeremy is dying and needs a bone-marrow transplant – a donor who could help has vanished and Emily wants Myron to find him. But there’s more: Jeremy is Myron’s son, conceived the night before Emily married another man. Knocked sideways by the revelations Myron begins his search assisted by his ex-FBI, sex-god, yoga aficionado, buddy Win.
Darkest Fear is very, very funny – with wisecracks and lots of self-deprecating humour but Coben is supremely accomplished at taking us from giggling to sniffing back tears in a few short sentences. Eloquent on the subject of fatherhood and fathers and sons. First-rate.
