Crow Stone by Jenni Mills

Kit Parry has reinvented herself and returns to work incognito as a mining engineer in the area of Bath where she grew up. She is employed on a project to shore up the underground quarries alongside the site foreman, Gary. Gary was a local boy who Kit knew, and fancied, as a teenager - an attraction that is still there. But a return to her roots awakens old ghosts, memories of her violent father and the summer that she escaped. The book begins with a bang that hooks the reader and doesn’t let up. Equally skilful in depicting the politics of the male-dominated work environment or the painful longing, loathing and vulnerability of adolescence, this is a terrific, nail-biting story. The whole world of mining and the setting of the underground labyrinths provides a fantastic, frightening and claustrophobic location for the mystery. The romance is nicely handled and Kit is a wonderful character. First novel from Jenni Mills - let’s hope she’s hard at work on the next.
