“Dear God, how I wish I’d never met her … sometimes I wished she was dead.”
When Martha moves in next door to Jennie the two women become firm friends. Martha seems to have everything: bohemian style, exuberant spirit, a gorgeous husband. Martha takes to motherhood with confidence but Jennie struggles and looks to her friend for reassurance and support. Martha tolerates her needy neighbour, helps her with the children and generously invites Jennie’s family to share holidays but Martha doesn’t know how much longer she can stomach Jennie. Then the roles begin to reverse, Martha’s life starts to unravel while Jennie grows increasingly independent and successful. The friendship sours and the two become enemies. The ill will between them leads inexorably to murder. Superb psychological thriller where perfectly pitched domestic life becomes the breeding ground for convincing and chilling violence. Addictive reading with an audacious but entirely apposite ending.
