John Ray Horn has fallen from grace. His career as B-movie cowboy, Sierra Lane, is in tatters after two years in prison, his marriage over, his name blacklisted by the film studios. Now Horn works as a debt collector for his old Indian co-star, Joseph Mad Crow. An old friend, Scotty, contacts Horn. Scotty has found obscene pictures in his late father’s office, among them one of Horn’s stepdaughter Clea, taken years earlier. When Scotty dies a sudden death and Clea goes missing Horn sets out to find her, trying to keep ahead of those determined to cover up the ugly truth behind the photographs.
Clea’s Moon was the deserved winner of the CWA Debut Dagger; Wright tells a great story with flair and assurance. Set in Los Angeles in the late 1940s: a world that includes the glitter of the Hollywood Hills, the stench of corruption, the fresh memory of war and the dream of the tough guy hero.
