The hills in Los Angeles are on fire, people are being evacuated and a corpse is found. An apparent suicide who sits with an album of photographs - shots taken shortly after death of seven young women who were murdered. The dead man was arrested for one of the murders but walked free after private detective Elvis Cole found proof that he couldn’t have committed the crime. Now Cole is forced to re-think - did he enable a killer to keep killing? Is he responsible for the fact that two more women died? Working with his strong and mostly silent partner Pike, drawing on contacts in the police department and pulling all the strings he can, Cole tries to solve the conundrum. Crais writes a mean action thriller with an appealing protagonist who has to deal with a troubled conscience and care for others as well as fight his way out of some deadly corners. There are some unexpected reversals, genuine surprises that shatter his (and our) notion of what’s going on. And among the grit and action some great dialogue and funny wisecracks. Another instalment in a solid and rewarding series.
