Cambridge Blue by Alison Bruce
hbk out December 08 Published by Constable at £18.99

One woman, Jackie Moran, is viciously attacked on the Cambridge river bank. Another, Lorna Spence, finds something fearful in the morning post. Lorna resents the jealous behaviour of her controlling boyfriend, and employer, Richard Moran. But soon Lorna is dead, discovered on Midsummer Common by young DC Gary Goodhew. Richard Moran claims Lorna was well-liked by staff, and by his sisters Alice and Jackie. But his assertion that she had no enemies is rapidly dismantled as Goodhew investigates. When there is a second brutal murder, Goodhew disobeys orders and goes off on his own hunt for the truth. This debut novel is engaging and very readable. Goodhew possesses characteristics that make him stand out from the crowd, including an inclination towards obsessive-compulsive behaviour, tensions in his family, an unswerving commitment to his work but an inability to stick to protocols if he has a lead. He has a vulnerable side and finds himself attracted to one of the people he must investigate. Bruce has created a winning character who will be back in subsequent books.
