Patti Black is a traumatised woman. A ghetto cop who has only survived the horrors of her childhood by creating an impermeable hard shell: tougher than everybody, needing no-one. Her fearlessness, badass swagger and vim have earned her many decorations and she is in line for promotion. But almost twenty years after she escaped the living hell of her foster-home, the discovery of a woman walled up in a tenement propels her right back there. Several apparently unrelated cases, including an attempt to assassinate the mayor, have bearing on the central story: Patti’s abuser is still alive and he’s after Patti’s son, who was adopted at birth. To save him she must sacrifice herself. Patti jettisons from one fire-fight to another accompanied for much of the time by the red-haired reporter Tracy Moens who has ‘the compassion of concrete on a cold day’. This thriller is written in a machine-gun street-demotic, a very tele-visual style that mirrors the breakneck, switchback tempo of the novel. High octane, adrenalin drenched and breathless.
