Blonde, busty Bubbles Yablonsky is a hairdresser in the run-down steel town of Lehigh, Pennsylvania and a spandex freak. Divorced from husband slimy Dan the Man, who has married the heiress of the Hauckman Cheeseball Empire, Bubbles is desperate to improve herself and make a better living so her daughter can go to college. Following failure on endless community college courses and with business at the salon precarious, Bubbles has a stab at journalism; after all a stylist is privvy to all the local gossip. She stumbles into the middle of a mystery about a long dead girl and the wealthy socialites of the town and stirs up enough trouble to get stalked, shot at and kidnapped. In the pell-mell she also meets sexy Associated Press photographer Stiletto, a Mel Gibson lookalike with a dangerous reputation. Strohemeyer's debut is unashamedly in the tradition of Janet Evanovitch and derivative of that strain of comic crime fiction right down to the incestuous small town setting and the kooky older generation (Bubbles' mother is a gun-toting rebel prone to prowling past funeral homes in search of new widowers). A snappy, action-packed, witty debut with recipes for home-made hair dye, peppermint foot soak and beauty treatments chucked into the mix. Bubbles is great entertainment.
