This, the first in a series of Irish police procedurals featuring Inspector Benedict Devlin, is
published under the Macmillan New Writing scheme and showcases a promising talent. It is
winter in the Borderlands between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. Christmas
approaches and the weather turns bitter as the body of a local teenager, Angela Cashell, is
discovered. An old photograph left where she died and a curious gold ring on the girl's finger
are clues to the story behind the murder. Angela's father, hard man Johnny Cashell, thinks he
knows the culprits and dispenses a bit of summary justice before the Garda catch up with him.
But when another teenager is killed, Benedict and his colleagues find links stretching back
twenty-five years, into the disappearance of a prostitute. Links which point to the
involvement of someone in their own ranks. A mesmerising story with a sympathetic
detective who, unlike many, has a settled home and family and a stable place in the local
community. McGilloway captures the landscape and the voices of the region very well and
writes fluently and poetically as he explores issues of vengeance, justice, and betrayal.
