Semana Santa in Seville, Easter passion week with processions through the streets. Spanish detective Javier Falcon is called in to investigate a gruesome killing. A leading restaurateur is found bound and gagged in front of his TV, his eyelids removed, his body ravaged by his attempts to escape. Falcon is not normally unnerved but this murder terrifies him. When the killer strikes again Falcon finds connections in his own family history to the victims. Forced to confront demons buried deep in his psyche the detective comes close to disintegration.
Wilson’s thriller may take a while to get into, at over 400 pages it’s no quick read, but it is well worth sticking with for a fascinating, harrowing and moving account of a man facing the most heartbreaking truths about his life. Wilson is a consummate writer, who uses a broad canvas to explore many mysteries and delivers a magnificent, and riveting, story.
