Carver writes pacey, energetic adventures placing her likeable characters in extreme
jeopardy and at the mercy of extreme climate – previous books have been set in the
baking outback. This time we're frozen in the wastes of Alaska.
Abby McCall and sister Lisa have been estranged for years, after a bitter row drove
them apart. But when their mother gets a call to tell her Lisa is missing, she
persuades Abby to travel from England to look for her sister. The cabin at the outpost
where Lisa lived and carried out her scientific research has been ransacked and her
files are gone. Abby learns that Lisa was on the verge of patenting a powerful
discovery: one that would undermine the oil-dominated energy industry. Lisa
struggles to survive in desperate cold while Abby, out of her element in the harsh and
physically demanding environment strives to get to her sister before her enemies do.
The scientific aspects of this thriller were convincing and astounding enough to have
me clicking on Google for verification.. Perfect for reading tucked up in front of a
blazing fire.
