When middle-aged college professor, Sherry, finds an anonymous note in her
locker on Valentine's Day, saying 'Be Mine', it signals the start of an intriguing
game of cat and mouse. Sherry has been married to the same man for
twenty years, her son has recently flown the nest and the prospect of an illicit
affair is both terrifying and highly exciting. But embarking on adultery brings
dangers: compromising friendships and forcing people into keeping or telling
secrets. When her husband becomes aware of the affair and apparently
accepts it, even using it to fuel his own sexual gratification, Sherry can't
believe her luck. But before long Sherry's lover goes missing, as does her
son's friend who was a witness to the liaison. Kasischke, an established US
poet and novelist, has written a powerful erotic thriller which captures perfectly
the obsession of sexual passion and maintains a taut narrative building
steadily towards a dreadful conclusion. She also portrays the domestic world
and the terrain of motherhood with skill and precision. Excellent.
