Location is invariably a strong element in crime novels and it is always refreshing to find a writer exploring a new setting. Here Brownlee chooses Mombassa in Kenya, and more particularly the world of game fishing off the Kenyan coast. Ex-flying squad cop Jake Moore runs a game fishing business that is teetering on the brink of insolvency. When the body of a criminal washes up on the beach and a fishing boat is blown up, with skipper and bait-boy aboard, Detective Daniel Jouma asks Jake to assist in his investigation. The duo soon find themselves in the murky waters of a far-reaching conspiracy. Bait is a rollicking adventure with danger at every turn and plenty of violent showdowns. The odd-couple characters are a pleasure to spend time with.
