Bad Friends by Claire Seeber
pbk out September 08 (Avon) at £6.99

A creepy, high-tension story of paranoia and suspicion as a woman struggles to identify where the real threat lies – and whether to fight to stay alive or succumb to her demons. Maggie survives a horrific coach crash and after a period of recuperation finds herself a guest on the TV chat show where she used to work. Appearing alongside her is another survivor, Fay, who is infatuated with Maggie. Ex-boyfriend Alex won’t leave Maggie alone, there are stresses around returning to work, someone is stalking her and then her flat is ransacked. Maggie is on the edge and has no sense of who she can trust anymore. Seeber is fantastic at describing contemporary life, including the world of the media where she herself works, and charting the terrain of anxiety and psychological turmoil. There was much made of a dark ‘secret’ in Maggie’s past, a mystery slow to be revealed and which didn’t really deserve the big build up it was given but that niggle aside this really is a terrific read.
