A new international thriller from Carr who has published four previous novels under
the pen name Jenny Siler. Experienced forger, Nicole, has retired from a life of crime
after six years in a Marseilles gaol. Now she tends to her simple garden in the
Pyrenees and makes a modest living testing innovations for a document security firm.
When American John Valsamis tracks her down and asks her to trace her ex-lover
Rahim Ali, who is suspected of terrorist atrocities, Nicole is drawn out of her
seclusion. Nicole can't believe that Ali has turned to violence and sets out to prove
Valsamis wrong, heading for Lisbon where Ali lives. The story is set against the
cities of Beirut and Lisbon, both vividly rendered with fine detail. The history and
politics of the Lebanese civil war and the events surrounding the bombing of the
American Embassy there, provide powerful terrain. Skilfully plotted and fast-paced
this is a brave, complex and assured thriller.
