When Police Constables Janet Taylor and Dennis Morrisey are called to a domestic disturbance at 35 The Hill they stumble upon a truly horrific scene. A scene which leaves Morrisey dead and Taylor fighting for her life and career as she faces an enquiry into her behaviour which could see her facing murder charges. The terrible discoveries at the home of a reputedly ordinary young couple reveal the identity of the Chameleon, a serial killer who has abducted five young women in the Yorkshire area. Inspector Alan Banks has been hunting the Chameleon and now faces the gruesome task of pulling together the evidence from the house and building a picture of exactly what went on behind closed doors.
Starting his story with the capture of the killer, Terence Payne, Robinson then focuses on the repercussions for all involved and on a central question: did Lucy Payne know her husband was a murderer? Aftermath makes for compulsive reading and Robinson skilfully sustains the tension and the interplay of the different storylines with their twists and shifts. The Yorkshire Dales, where Banks lives, are authentically and affectionately described. This is the twelfth novel in the series and is not suitable for those of a nervous disposition. Chilling and thrilling.
