Inspector William Monk is now working for the Thames River Police and when a small-time
crook washes up on the riverbank it is clear he has been murdered. Monk’s
investigation leads him into the brutal and harrowing trade of child prostitution
and pornography. It’s a world Monk has already encountered: he and his wife
Hester have taken in Scuff, a young boy rescued from a prostitution ring. Current
enquiries implicate some of the great and the good, among them a relation of Oliver
Rathbone, the lawyer who is Monk’s personal friend. Perry excels at capturing
the setting of Victorian London but what really stands out is the emotional depth
she brings to her characters. They each in turn have to struggle with conflicting
loyalties and questions of law and justice. Though the trappings that surround
the crimes may have altered a little, the crimes themselves sadly will not be
unfamiliar to the modern reader and the themes that Perry examines are still critically
important today.
