Above Suspicion by
Frank Lean
Manchester private eye, Dave Cunane, is approached by famous international
footballer Jamie Piercy. He wants Cunane to trace the men who kidnapped his
baby niece, demanded £500,000 for her return and left her in the boot of an
abandoned car. Jamie's brother Lee is a professional gambler and match
fixer and neither of them want the police involved. A whiff of scandal and
Jamie's career would be finished.
As Cunane digs deeper he finds a tale of extortion and murder and realises
that some of Manchester's most successful criminals are being blackmailed.
The trail leads him into the shady world of organised crime, of drug
smuggling and corruption on and off the soccer pitch. The soft-hearted
Cunane offers shelter to disgraced nanny, Naomi and not long after is landed
with gentle giant Clint, a young lad with learning difficulties whose
brother has had to skip the country and lie low for a while. While Cunane's
work becomes ever more fraught with danger, at home he has to try and keep
his girlfriend Janine happy and enlist her help in caring for their new
waifs and strays.
Above Suspicion forces Cunane to make tricky choices about justice, morality
and vengeance in a city where everyone seems to be tainted and the body
count keeps rising. Laced with humour and many Manchester references to
savour.
