The Mammoth Book Of Murder by
Colin Wilson
pbk out February 02
(Robinson)
at £7.99
The book starts with Damon Wilson, the author's son, giving insight into
life with his criminologist father. It's an intriguing start to a book with a
very broad scope. Unfortunately, the breadth of its topic is also its
weakness, for it's unlikely that most true crime readers will be equally
interested in prehistoric man, assassins, Elizabethan murders, killers in
the Gin Age and so on.
For this reviewer, the sections on sex crime, gun men and serial killers
were the most interesting and - as in every chapter - Wilson overviews an
remarkable number of cases. He excels in the facts rather than analysis,
which makes this book useful for the researcher looking for a starting
point and provides a quirky introduction for the reader who is new to true
crime.
The Mammoth Book Of Murder clocks in at an impressive 639 pages and
includes murders from Britain, America, Australia, Hungary and
Germany.
