The Insider's Guide to Getting Your Book Published by
Rachael Stock

'Getting published is more a combination of art and luck than it is
science,' Rachael Stock admits in this useful overview of the book
industry. She knows that there's no magic formula, but offers strategies
that will help.
Occasionally the book strays into Pollyanna territory (`When choosing a
publisher you need to look for the one that offers you the best starting rate
and the best escalator.' This in a climate where only one percent of books
are ever published) but the detailed chapter on writing a proposal is the
best I've ever seen. As such, The Insider's Guide is invaluable to the
expert who is capable of writing a non-fiction book but who doesn't
know how to structure their approach or sell themselves.
This illuminating guide concentrates on marketing factual books, so if
you want an overview of fiction publishing as well, check out David
Armstrong's laugh-out-loud How Not To Write A Novel. Together they'll
tell you all you need to know about this idiosyncratic industry.
