This book is subtitled My Most Chilling Cases As A Prosecutor - and the
three cases are chilling because of the appalling damage done to the
victims. But they're of limited interest to those true crime fans who want
to know about the perpetrator's formative influences.
The first case involves a pimp and his friends who tied up two prostitutes
then set fire to the room that they were imprisoned in. Fortunately one of
the women managed to untie herself and free her companion and the
elderly man who owned the house.
In the second case, a young gay male picked up another in a gay
restaurant and accompanied him back to his Los Angeles apartment.
There he was sodomised violently with an enormous dildo, resulting in
injuries which required a colostomy. The judge was homophobic so
Marissa Batt lost this case, but she told the devastated victim that she was
a buddhist and knew that he would get justice in another life.
The third case - which she also lost - featured a neighbourhood watch
vigilant who beat up a drugged passerby, leaving him with brain damage
and swallowing difficulties. He later choked on a morsel of food and
died.
Ready For The People should be of interest to anyone who wants to know
more about the American judicial process. It will also be of use to
novelists who want to understand what a US prosecutor does.
