Dancing for the Hangman by Martin Edwards
hbk out September 08 Published by Flambard Press at £8.99

In 1910, Dr Hawley Crippen was convicted of murdering his domineering wife, Cora, at their London home. The prosecution alleged that he had killed her deliberately in order to become the common-law-husband of his mistress Ethel Le Neve and the fact that they had fled abroad looked deeply suspicious. But the mild mannered doctor continued to protest his innocence to the end.
Now, respected crime author Martin Edwards has written a novelised version of the case which posits a different theory. It reads as well as the best historical fiction and brings the characters fully to life. It’s a big book but I read it at a couple of sittings, fully immersed in the storyline and enjoying the beauty of the prose.
Was Dr Crippen a self-serving and coldblooded killer or merely a lust-filled man who made a terrible mistake and ended up dancing on the end of the hangman’s rope?
