An Edinburgh novel, the sixth in the DI Jim Meldrum series about a
divorced detective with family problems. He is a dour-sounding
character, with a temptation to the bottle and the occasional dalliance
with women of ill-repute. He is at odds with his police team, especially
with his sergeant, McGuigan, who believes that his morose guvnor is
losing his grip.
In this story, Meldrum is called to the death of an old Pentecostal
minister, which turns out to be the first of a series of strange murders.
Interlaced with the investigation of this and several other deaths, there are
excursions into a small cult-like organisation, dominated by a man called
the Convenor. Strong religious overtones are used to justify the killings,
though the arch-villain is a criminal turned soldier who relapses again
into crime. I found the final explanation a bit hazy, but it is a gripping
story well-told, even if I developed a mental picture of Meldrum as a
miserable Scotsman very much like Gordon Brown.
