It is easy to see why Michael Connelly sells so many hundreds of
thousands of his books, as they are straight-forward, no-messing-about
stories that are easy and satisfying to read.
The most recent is The Overlook, named for the place where the killing
took place, a view-point on a road in the hills above Los Angeles.
His main character, Harry Bosch, is a LAPD detective, recently re-
assigned to the Special Homicide squad. The story-line is absolutely
clear, with no flash-backs, psychological insights or diversions, the whole
saga being over in the first day.
A body is found in a car at the Overlook which soon turns out to be a
doctor specialising in commercial nuclear medicine, providing radio-
active isotopes for therapy. As soon as the fact emerges that a quantity of
these have gone missing from a local hospital, the terrorist balloon goes
up and much of the story concerns the antipathy between the FBI and the
local police forces, the Feds seemingly doing all they can to frustrate the
LAPD's investigation.
The story has a twist which is not all that unpredictable by the half-way
mark, but it is a good yarn and one that will keep you turning the pages.
