Another 'Bernie Gunther mystery' revolving around a former pre-war
Berlin policeman, who was reluctantly drafted into the SS, was a POW in
Russia and who in 1949, set up as a private detective in Munich.
Much of the story revolves around the aftermath of the concentration
camps and the need for many former inmates to be traced.
Bernie is hired by an attractive woman to determine whether her husband
is still alive, as she wants to remarry – but he was not an inmate, but the
commandants of one of the worst Polish camps.
The plot is complex and full of deceits and twists, with Bernie getting
hard time, including a beating that almost kills him. Being in the
American Zone, their activities play a major part, including the nefarious
involvement of the CIA in medical experiments. A gripping and
sometimes disturbing story and at the end, the author gives an historical
note which justifies the truth of some of his plot.
