Ann Granger, a very civilised lady who was formerly in the
diplomatic service, writes in what could be called the 'cosy' genre of
whodunits, her books being based in rural Oxfordshire. Her lead
characters are Detective Superintendent Alan Markby and his fiancé
Meredith Mitchell, who over the years have become involved in well
over a dozen homicidal escapades.
In this one, Meredith's cousin Toby, who also appeared in previous
books, prevails upon them to look into anonymous letters received
by a relative Alison, who is married to a rich tycoon living in a
Cotswold mansion. The said Alison was acquitted many years ago of
murdering her aunt, but the affair seems to have returned to haunt
her. It soon turns into another two murders and the plot thickens.
With a perceptive eye for character traits and the things in modern
life that irritate us all, Ann Granger writes beautifully.
This is a nice easy read in the style of Aunt Agatha, and is blissfully
free of the foul language and gratuitously explicit sex that now seems
as obligatory for new crime writers as a leather jacket and open-
necked shirt.
