A Fran Varady mystery, recounting the further adventures of Ann
Granger's well-known down-market private eye. Fran is a well-educated
and well-brought-up girl who fell on hard times and until recently lived in
a squat in South London. She has now pulled herself up and has a flat, an
Indian boyfriend and a job of sorts as an investigator.
When living rough, she had Edna, an old bag-lady as a friend, but lost
touch until she saw her in the street, frightened by the sight of a young
man stalking her. The plot follows the convolutions arising from this, as
the said young man soon ends up dead. It is obvious fairly early on that
family relationships and inheritance are at the bottom of the plot, which
rather stretches the necessary suspension of disbelief.
However, a worthwhile read, though I felt that the long explanation
towards the end was a bit too much of a mouthful in one lump to be easily
digestible.
