Night Work by Steve Hamilton
hbk out October 07 Published by Orion at £18.99

Billed on the cover as 'the thriller writer's thriller writer', Steve Hamilton certainly puts out a good story. This one is set in Kingston, the old state capital of New York and the narrating central character is Joe Trumbull, an ex-cop turned probation officer. Two years after his fiancé is strangled, he feels able at last to go on his first blind date – and the woman is strangled soon after he leaves her. The local police call in equivalent of the State CID, whose two emissaries haul in Joe as a suspect. His old school-friend is a local detective and they combine to probe the circumstances to try to clear his name. After the briefest of encounters with a lady real estate agent, she too is found dead and it is obvious that there is a conspiracy against Trumbull. The dénouement is genuinely thrilling, though from the way the plot and characters shape up, it is not too difficult to spot 'who-dunnit' from about the half-way mark. Still, a well-constructed and suspenseful story.
