This is the Murphy of the BBC television series 'Murphy's Law' and
revolves around Martin Murphy, now an undercover cop in London,
after being in the Special Branch in Ulster.
An organisation called 'Confront' exists for the support of the relatives of
murdered persons. It is run by a psychiatrist who is himself bereaved and
part of his group therapy consists of harassing culprits who have escaped
punishment because of some quirk of the legal system.
Several of these have died violently and Murphy's task is to infiltrate
'Confront' to discover if their members are dispensing private justice. As
the IRA killed his own child some years earlier, he has a natural
sympathy for their views, which conflicts with his duties as a police
officer. Murphy becomes involved in an affair with one of the female
members, complicating an already complicated situation.
It is a 'hard man' type of book, but written with wit and even whimsy. In
fact, some of the irrelevant chit-chat becomes rather irritating in places,
but overall, it is a good read.
