There seem to be a considerable number of crime novels based on
horseracing, in the general style of the master, Dick Francis. The format
is often similar, with a good-looking ambitious jockey working in a stable
where he is the boy-friend of the boss's daughter, there being various
vendettas and jealousies between rival owners and trainers, leading to
violence. This is another one and undoubtedly enjoyable to those many
people who enjoy watching and reading about horses running around a
large field.
Matt Shepherd lives with Kendra, the daughter of a rich social-climbing
horse-owner, who virtually employs Matt through a stable he owns.
Jamie, a volatile but up-and-coming jockey is staying with Matt, but gets
into a shouting match with his own girl-friend Sophie at a racing disco
and storms off to drink himself silly. An hour later, Matt finds her
battered body in a stream and Jamie is suspect Number One and
eventually is arrested. The story, which has a rather confusing surfeit of
characters, is about Matt's efforts to clear Jamie's name. A good read for
those who like the details of horses going 'over the sticks'.
