Just as the Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq, Ulster and other conflicts have given rise
to so many novels, it now seems Afghanistan’s turn.
Dan Carter, a former sniper in that country, became a security man after leaving
the Army, but unlucky involvement in the assassination of a Muslim dissident in
London forces him and his family into four years of hiding organised by a government
protection scheme.
Eventually he gets permission to take a family holiday in Tobago but when he gets
to Gatwick, he finds he does not have his passport. His wife and two children
go on without him and next day, he learns that the plane has crashed with no survivors.
The tortuous plot, in which nothing can be taken at face value, takes him through
many perilous adventures, being a classical hunted man scenario, but eventually
he ends up as a captive back in Afghanistan.
Not a cheerful book by any means, but it was not intended to be and if one can
summon the usual suspension of disbelief necessary for such thrillers, it is well-written,
fast and violent.
