A good straight-down-the-middle British village mystery, on the lines of
Midsomer Murders, for which the author has written scripts, as well as
for Poirot, Boon, Z-Cars and Lovejoy.
The writing shows clear signs of the professional writer that Marcus Barr
is, and it is real page-turner, especially for a first novel featuring Nathan
Hawk, a recently-retired DCI and head of a Murder Squad. So many
fictional detectives seems to be either widowed or divorced senior police
officers and here is another one – but a chap who also has Anger
Management Disorder.
Driving home from a dinner party, he comes across a local restaurant/pub
owner and his wife who have been shot and he cannot resist becoming
involved in the investigation. He falls out with the DI in charge, but the
sergeant seems more sympathetic to this very able has-been.
Complications set in because of the close relationships within the village,
Hawk becoming attracted to the local GP.
This is the sort of book that gets dirty, not because of the content, but the
marmalade rubs off when one reads it at the breakfast table, eager to
know what happens next.
