An exciting and well-written book about a pair of psychopaths who indulge in e-mail games, stalking, rape and finally serial murder. One of them is dominant over the other lesser partner, who is arrested early in the book when he attempts to waylay his e-mail contact in a park, but is confounded by the victim being a police decoy. The woman, Sergeant Louise Nightingale, is so disturbed by the attack that she eventually takes off to recover in a derelict house in Devon left to her by an aunt, but the other member of the evil pair tracks her, having already tried to get his partner out of jail by committing similar killings intended to demonstrate that the perpetrator is still at large.
This is a substantial book of almost 500 pages and the tension is well- maintained throughout, a latent romantic element being the attraction between Louise and her Detective Chief Inspector, who has great difficulty in convincing other senior officers that she is in serious danger. There are a number of violent episodes in the book, perhaps too graphic for weaker stomachs and one aspect I found interesting was that the author is a most attractive married woman and Chief Executive of an international investment company – perhaps not the image that jumps to mind as the writer of such physically grisly text. However, this is an excellent and gripping read, highly recommended for those not of a nervous disposition.
